Anupama strongly believes that art, and the culture and values it represents and brings along with it, should be accessible to one and all. To this end, she tries to be a part of several initiatives and associates herself with different organisations whose vision aligns with that of her own.
The concept of ‘giving back’ was ingrained in her during her childhood days, when her parents arranged for her birthdays to be celebrated at orphanages or old age homes, distributing food, clothes and toys to the lesser privileged, and spending time with them. Anupama has also performed small informal concerts on such occasions for several non-profit institutions.
COVID was another specific instance of a time when performing arts could be used to boost the morale of the people and also give courage and hope. During this time, Anupama took part in some of the social initiatives and events for fund-raising and for NGOs by various IIM Alumni groups. She was also part of a charity performance at St. Judes organised by Bharatanatya Kalalaya Mumbai and Guru Smt. Geetha Venkateswar.
Anupama has been elected as member, Managing Committee of Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, a premier cultural institution. She has been given the honorary roles of ‘Convenor of the Sangeetha Vidyalaya’ as well as ‘Honorary Director of the Natya Vidyalaya’, tasked primarily with streamlining and expanding the music and dance school in order to promote the classical arts and to make it accessible to one and all.
Anupama also strives to inspire the next generation by encouraging her students in every way possible. She has encouraged her senior students to join her as faculty members at Vidya Vardhini. Together, they train students of varying age groups and learning objectives, through various batches, both online and offline. Anupama has students from different cities of India, as well as from the UK, Europe, US and the Middle East. She has also conducted several online sessions to help and encourage aspiring learners from various geographies, especially during the lockdown. She enjoys performing for social causes and believes that performing arts is a medium of communication that is deeply rooted in our rich cultural heritage. She also emphasises on the varied benefits of learning an art form, and the impact it can have on the young minds, in helping them focus and do better in school, and help in a well rounded holistic growth. Anupama was awarded the “Kamala Power Women” award at the hands of the Governor of Mumbai for her efforts in spreading the classical arts.
She additionally trains her Mumbai students and their family and friends for the Chinmaya Mission Gita Chanting competitions. What started as a little initiative a few years ago, has blossomed into a fruitful satisfying experience year after year – she takes this up as a purely voluntary social cause, and is assisted by some of her willing senior students too. Under their able training, many students have won several laurels in music as well as shlokas, including Western Zone 1st Prize in Gita Chanting and several prizes in music competitions conducted by various organisations.
