about Anupama Devarajan

Anupama Devarajan is a Carnatic vocalist and Bharatanatyam artiste with over 3 decades of learning and experience. She has the rare accomplishment of being an empanelled graded artiste of both All India Radio (for Carnatic Vocal) as well as Doordarshan (for Bharatanatyam).

A computer engineer, an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and an ex-investment banker, Anupama chose the performing arts over a career in financial advisory. She now professionally pursues her passion for the performing arts as an active performer as well as a teacher. She has set up her academy Vidya Vardhini Institute of Fine Arts to spread arts and culture. She has performed both as a Carnatic vocalist and as a Bharatanatyam artiste at various venues across India as well as abroad. She was also conferred with the “Kamala Power Women” award at the hands of the Governor of Maharashtra for her contribution to the performing arts.

Her Journey in Brief

Growing up in Chennai, Anupama was introduced to Carnatic vocal and Bharatanatyam at a very young age, thanks to her musically inclined family. She started giving stage performances and winning several competitions during her school days, while continuing to win awards and trophies for academic excellence too. After her Bachelor of Engineering and Post Graduate Diploma in Management from IIM Ahmedabad, she entered the corporate world in the banking industry, while continuing to train in and perform both music and dance whenever she got the chance. After a successful corporate stint in Hong Kong and later London, she decided to move back to India and, in due course, chose the performing arts over a career in financial advisory.

Apart from getting empanelled in Mumbai as a graded artiste performer of both All India Radio and Doordarshan, Anupama also dons the role of a teacher, through her academy Vidya Vardhini Fine Arts and also as faculty in her dance Guru’s institute Bharatanatya Kalalaya Mumbai. She regularly gives Carnatic vocal concerts and some her students have also started performing and teaching. She enjoys singing for dance and writing / composing music too. She regularly gives Bharatanatyam performances, both solo and group, and also helps her Guru in choreography and teaching.

In an effort to spread Indian arts and culture, Anupama also utilises her proficiency in Sanskrit vedas and shlokas to train her students, many of whom have won top laurels in Sanskrit shloka and Bhagavadgita competitions. She has also been elected as member, Managing Committee of Shanmukhananda in an honorary role, tasked primarily with streamlining and expanding the Sangeetha Vidyalaya and Natya Vidyalaya, their school of Fine Arts, using her business management skills, combined with her expertise in, and passion for, the fine art forms.

Her Gurus

Anupama owes her achievements to the support of her family and the blessings, encouragement and support of her Gurus. In music, she was fortunate to be trained by several stalwarts while growing up in Chennai. She started her journey with Smt. Vanaja Vishwanathan and later continued with Gurus such as Shri KV Krishnan, Smt. Suguna Purushothaman and Smt. Mangalam Shankar in Chennai. She has also had special advanced training from Smt. Sulochana Pattabhiraman, Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan, Shri B Rajam Iyer, Trichy Shri J Venkataraman and Chethalapathi Shri Balasubramanian. She is currently pursuing advanced training under Guru Smt. Radha Namboodiri in Mumbai, who is a Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sangeetha Kala Acharya and Shanmukha Sangeetha Pracharya awardee.

Anupama started her Bharatanatyam journey under Guru Smt. Jayanthi Subramaniam in Chennai, who is a senior disciple of Adyar Shri K Lakshmanan and Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan. She continues her journey as a performer and teacher under the mentorship of Guru Smt. Geetha Venkateswar at Bharatanatya Kalalaya Mumbai. Anupama has also studied the art of nattuvangam under Guru Bhagavatulu Shri Seetharama Sharma in Chennai and Guru Shri K Kalishwaran in Mumbai.
