Anupama Devarajan is a Carnatic vocalist and Bharatanatyam artiste with over 3 decades of learning and experience. She has the rare accomplishment of being an empanelled graded artiste of both All India Radio (for Carnatic Vocal) as well as Doordarshan (for Bharatanatyam).
A computer engineer, an alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and an ex-investment banker, Anupama chose the performing arts over a career in financial advisory. She now professionally pursues her passion for the performing arts as an active performer as well as a teacher. She has set up her academy Vidya Vardhini Institute of Fine Arts to spread arts and culture.
Urmila Sathyanarayanan is an outstanding performer, institution builder who produces solo performers, group productions and trains passionate youngsters. Her contribution in the field of Bharatanatyam is enormous. Since her debut in 1976, Urmila has presented dozens of recitals in India and abroad and earned excellent reviews from eminent critics. She has danced in practically every dance festival in India.
“It is heartening to see that Urmila Sathyanarayanan has proved her credentials as an excellent teacher apart from having established herself as one of India’s leading Bharatanatyam dancers. Her Natya Sankalpaa stands witness to this. In a reasonably short span of ten years for an Institution, her school has already presented many young aspirants who are sure to blossom as artists. She has a dedicated bunch of young teachers to give the students a strong grooming.”
“Smt Urmila Sathyanarayanan is one of the top Bharatanatayam artistes of recent years. She is very talented and dedicated to the subject of dance. To prove that, Sri Krishna Gana Sabha conferred the title ‘Nrithyachoodamani’ on her. On the happy occasion of her completing a decade training students, we should place on record her valuable contribution to the art and wish her all luck and success in the future. We would like to take the liberty of giving a little advice to all her students to imbibe her dedication and perfectionism and become talented artistes of the next generation by virtue of their hard work.”
It in indeed commendable that Urmila has engaged herself in the task of disseminating this treasured art, that I value and respect, inspite of being one of the best exponents of the art herself. It only goes to show her perseverance and passion for the art of Bharatanatyam. I pray to the Almighty that Smt. Urmila Sathyanarayanan and all those who have helped her achieve this, be given the strength and solidarity to spread this salvaged fine art in the society for many many more years to come.”
